Spring cleanup starts Monday

City crews will start picking up bulky waste from curbs Monday morning for Spring Cleanup.

Spring Cleanup is this week. Cleanup items should be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. Monday.

Acceptable items include appliances, furniture, mattresses and up to four tires without rims. Place items in bags or boxes, if possible.

Household hazardous waste -- including paints, chemicals, fertilizers, batteries, oils and fluorescent light bulbs -- will be collected at the Transfer Station at 1108 E. Ashley St. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. A $5 fee is charged per load. Go online to bit.ly/1h1oems for quantity limits.

In January, household hazardous waste started to be collected every Friday at the Transfer Station. As of March 24, a total of 11 customers had disposed of about 600 pounds of paint, 25 florescent light bulbs and a five-gallon bucket of batteries.

During Spring Cleanup, electronics can be taken to the Transfer Station for free disposal. Electronics, such as TVs, microwaves, stereos, computers and monitors, will not be picked up at the curb.

Yard waste is not included in the cleanup but will be picked up on the regular monthly schedule.

The city hosts fall and spring cleanups.

In the Fall Cleanup 2013, city crews collected 164 tons of trash.
