Siloam Springs Writers announce their annual Workshop and Contest

Siloam Springs Writers announced their annual workshop and contest will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 27.

The event will take place at the Siloam Springs Senior Activity Center at 750 Heritage Court. Admission is $15 and includes a luncheon and entry at the door to the inspirational poem contest.

The morning workshop prose teacher and judge will be Brad Gambill. The afternoon workshop poetry teacher and judge will be Patty Kirk.

Contest entries and fees must be received by Sept. 4. The contest will include prose and poetry competitions.

Prose contest divisions include:

• Adults short story, maximum 1,500 words

• Daily devotional, maximum 300 words plus scripture

• What my mother taught me, maximum 1,000 words

• Hats and caps, maximum 1,000 words

• Guest editorial, maximum 800 words

Poetry contest divisions include:

• Spenserian Sonnet abab bcbc cdcd ee iambic pentameter

• Rondeau abab baba abab baba abab baba c (Last line is a portion of the 1st line)

• Couplet Poem (30 lines or less)

• Child's Fun Poem

• Free Verse on Nature

Children and youth contest divisions include:

• What I Like About My Town, maximum 500 words

• Any subject poetry, maximum of 500 words

• Something I Love, rhyming

• Hats and caps, any style

Winners in each category will receive $25 for first place, $15 for second place, $10 for third place and $5 for honorable mention. Children and youth will receive $15 for first place, $10 for second place, $5 for third place and $3 for honorable mention. An award of $25 will be given on the winning inspirational poem, any style, turned in at the door.

Award money is supplied by the Roy Chesney Fund.

Entry fees for nonmembers are $15 for the first entry and $7.50 for each additional entry. Entry fees for members, including junior members are $1 per entry.

Participants may only submit one entry per category but there is no limit on the number of categories. Each entry must be the original work of the person who submits it. Entries that have been previously published or have won in previous contests are not eligible. Siloam Springs Writers' monthly assignments are eligible regardless of placement. Entries with foul language or profanity will not be judged.

All prose entries must be typed, double-spaced and in standard format. Poetry may be single-spaced. Names should not be put on the entry, but writers should include a cover sheet with title, first and second lines, author's name, address, a telephone number and if possible an e-mail address.

Writers should keep a copy of the entry for themselves. Entries will not be returned by mail.

Judges will not be liable for decisions. All awards are final and not contestable.
