Results of the most recent Minimum Performance Tests showed Siloam Springs students had made good gains in some areas, over those of the previous year.

The figures were from the third administration of the tests given in July to eighth-graders, and were compared to the results of the previous administration of the tests in 1988. Third- and sixth- graders were also tested, but only eighth-grade students had to pass all portions of the test in order to be promoted.

The biggest gains came in the fields of math, language arts, science and social studies.

Social studies showed the biggest gain at 9 percent compared to the previous year.

This was followed by language arts and science showing gains of 6.7 percent and 6.8 percent respectively. Math showed a gain of 4.5 percent over 1988 scores.

Those combined for a total score of 98.5 percent, which was 4.5 percent better than the year before.

The city of Siloam Springs hosted its inaugural air show, Wings Over Siloam Springs at the municipal airport, Cecil Smith Field.

The show included performances by world-class and amateur aerobatics pilots and vintage World War II planes and static aircraft displays.

Mark Latham, city administrator, listed two reasons the city decided to host an air show: to promote the airport -- a lot of people didn't know about it, even in Siloam; plus, it's a good way to enjoy family time.

Performers included Bobby Younkin, Guy "Doc" Baldwin, the Sooner Squadron, Gary Boucher, Steve Culp and Mary Dilda.

The vintage planes of the Sooner Squadron were utilized in World War II over Europe and the Pacific.
