The 2014-2015 school year is here and the Colcord (Okla.) FFA is in full swing.

The shop students are busy building hay rings, speech topics are being chosen, the creed team is preparing for competition, the livestock show team has made their way around the ring and members are scrambling to find Blue and Gold buyers. Many students are working hard to restore a 1974 Massey Ferguson Tractor that was donated to the chapter by a local family that will be raffled off at the end of the year banquet in May.

The 2014-2015 officer team held their first meeting of the school year on Aug. 15. Officers informed new and returning members about the summer events that had taken place, as well as the upcoming events and improvements to the chapter.

On Sept. 4 through 6, members of the chapter showed poultry, cattle, sheep, and goats at the Delaware County Fair. Not only did the chapter take home a few trophies and a ton of blue ribbons, but it also won the herdsman group award.

The Agricultural Structures class built a hay ring and a sheep walker that both won first place ribbons. The hay ring was auctioned off at the silent auction at the end of the fair along with other items as a fundraiser for the chapter. The auction was hosted by the Colcord FFA Alumni.

At the fair on Saturday afternoon, 18 members participated in the livestock judging contest. Benton Denny, Bailey Phillips, Malcolm Potter and Joey Rombach were on the Colcord FFA junior team that took first place. Gracie Barbee, Joseph Young, Trenton Lyons, and Brent Summers were on the other Colcord junior team that took second place.

Potter took first place high individual, Denny took second place high individual, Barbee took place third high individual, Summers took fourth place high individual, and Phillips took fifth place high individual.

On Sept. 9, the Colcord FFA Officer Team attended the Northeast District Chapter Officer Leadership Team (COLT) Conference where they learned leadership skills and more about each other's strengths through group activities and discussion with our Oklahoma State FFA Officer Team.

The Colcord FFA was also recognized as a national chapter, as well as a national finalist with its national chapter application at the conference. FFA sponsor Josh Gilstrap and the Colcord FFA Officers are continually developing new ideas to improve the chapter and better serve our members. This year is off to a great start and members are all excited for the opportunities, experiences, and memories to come.
