Daniels earns weekly honor

OKLAHOMA CITY -- John Brown University sophomore setter Shayna Daniels has been named the Sooner Athletic Conference's Player of the Week for the week ending on Sept. 21, the conference offices announced Monday afternoon.

Additional honors went to Texas Wesleyan's Meghan Finley as Hitter of the Week, Oklahoma Baptist's Ezgi Guney as Setter of the Week and Oklahoma City's Kelley Shiels as Libero of the Week.

Daniels, a native of Magnolia, Texas, helped the Golden Eagles (10-5, 1-1 SAC) to a 1-1 week -- a win over Mid-America Christian (Okla.) and a loss to Oklahoma City. She landed 16 kills, 52 assists, eight service aces and three block assists in the pair of matches. Daniels finished the week with a .306 hitting percentage, posting her 16 terminations on 36 total attempts.

Daniels now ranks No. 6 in the nation in total aces (32) and No. 19 nationally in service aces per set (.600).

Finley helped Texas Wesleyan to a 1-1 week, which included a 3-1 win against Mid-America Christian (Okla.) and a loss to Wayland Baptist (Texas). The Tuscon, Ariz., native averaged 2.83 kills and 1.0 block assist in a six-game span. For the week, she had 17 kills against only two errors in 28 attempts for an attack percentage of .536.

Guney, a senior setter from Istanbul, Turkey, averaged 8.67 assists over a 12-game span that saw Oklahoma Baptist go 4-0 with sweeps over all four teams -- St. Gregory's (Okla.), Southwestern Christian (Okla.), Southern Nazarene (Okla.) and Mid-America Christian. Guney helped OBU to improve to 13-6 on the year. Her best game came against SNU when she had 34 assists, five kills and seven digs in the 3-0 win.

Shiels, a senior defensive specialist from Edmond, Okla., averaged 3.91 digs in an 11-set span that saw Oklahoma City go 2-1 with wins over Southwestern A.G. (Texas) and JBU to improve its overall record to 9-3 on the year. The award was her second of the season.
