JBU finishes 8th at Mountain Home tourney

MOUNTAIN HOME -- John Brown sophomore golfer Trevor Barton turned in a two-day total of 154, 10 over par, to help the Golden Eagles to an eighth-place finish at the Bear State Bank Invitational last week at Big Creek Country Club.

Barton fired a three-over 75 on April 6, propelling the squad to a sixth-place, first-day finish. However, the par-72, 7,242-yard course gave JBU fits on the second day, April 7, as the team fell to eighth place. The Golden Eagles finished the first day with a 305 team score but added 16 shots to its first-day mark (324) to finish at 632.

Barton finished the tournament with a day-two card of 79 to finish tied for 23rd overall and added a team-high 23 pars. Sophomore Josh Crystal fired 21 pars and finished in a tie for 33rd with a card of 79-78-157. Junior Sam Greenleaf holed 22 pars but added three shots to his day two total and finished at 78-81-159, good enough for a tie for 38th.

Junior Robert Raborn carded a 76-86-162 for 43rd place and senior Tommy Wright completed an 83-87-170 two-day score.

Henderson State (Ark.) won the team title by six strokes over Missouri Western State as the Reddies landed a team score of 579 while the Griffons totaled 585. Southern Arkansas placed third (606), followed by East Central (607), Arkansas-Monticello (608) and Harding (612). Christian Brothers totaled a 615 to finish in seventh place with John Brown (632) and Northwestern Oklahoma (640) rounded out the nine-team field.

HSU's Brice Howard turned in a two-day total of 142 (-2). He fired a round of 70 on Monday and turned in a round of even par on Tuesday to become the individual medalist.

The Golden Eagles will now prepare for the Sooner Athletic Conference championships on April 20-21. The championships will be held at the Shangri-La Golf Club in Monkey Island, Okla.
