Court building may get new roof

The city Board of Directors will vote on a roof replacement for the district court building Tuesday.

For the last 15 years, the building's roof has been a spring of leaks. When the former Siloam Springs Police Department was at the location at North Broadway Street, one would have to dodge the many trash cans that lined the hallways to catch the drips.

In the last year, two major rains flooded the courtroom, which caused damage, city administrator Phillip Patterson wrote in a memo to the board.

"During the past year, staff requested a structural engineer examine the entire building for soundness," he wrote. "To prevent further deterioration of the building and it's contents, the entire roof needs to be replaced."

At the April 7 board meeting, directors requested that the city re-examine the building to ensure mold had not begun to grow.

The city contracted with an outside source to conduct a moisture and visible mold test; however, the results had not been reviewed as of press time.

"We just got the results back today and the building inspector hasn't had the time to come up with a recommendation," said city communications manager Holland Hayden.

The city has received a bid from Roofing Systems Inc., for $146,819 to remove all the soiled insulation and re-roof the building.

In other business, directors will vote on:

• An ordinance to rezone property at 2209 and 2211 W. Central St. from R-1 (residential, medium) to R-4 (residential, multi-family). The request was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission on April 14.

• A resolution that will allow the city to purchase 4.23 acres of land at 23328 Raines Road for the future expansion of the city's Water Treatment Facility.
