10 Years Ago: ADG exercises option to purchase CPI papers

From the Herald and Democrat in 1965

A total of 30,000 pounds of frozen chicken was shipped by Plus Poultry from their Cross Town division by the Kansas City Southern's new piggy-back facility. The new spur loading-track was reached by the road east of the Armory.

The chicken was packed in a new metal refrigerated trailer atop a flat car. This was then sent to New Orleans, the chickens loaded on a boat and shipped to Germany.

This method of shipment was cheaper, faster and much more satisfactory. Plus was shipping their products to all parts of the world and planned to use this method of transportation extensively in the future.

"Message of Love"

She looks at me

With eyes so warm and brown;

Conveying a message of love

Without a word, without a sound.

She is warmth and love

Laughter and tears.

The daughter I have wanted

Throughout the years.

Being a mother-in-law

Is a blessing in disguise;

For I can see the love

And understanding in her eyes.

She seems to see

Into the depth of my soul;

Knowing I need her and my son's love

To make my life whole.

God heard my prayers

And smiled at me from above.

He sent this daughter-in-law,

A message of love.

From the Herald-Leader in 2005

The Siloam Springs Herald-Leader, along with two daily and seven other weekly papers involved in an alliance between Bentonville-based Community Publishers and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, was purchased outright by the Democrat-Gazette.

Democrat-Gazette owner Walter E. Hussman Jr. announced that it had exercised an option to purchase The Benton County Daily Record, the Northwest Arkansas Times and related assets, including eight weekly newspapers in Benton and Washington counties. The alliance between the two newspaper groups celebrated its fifth anniversary that year.

Mike Brown, a shareholder in CPI who served as executive vice president and publisher of The Benton County Daily Record, remained with CPI. He resigned as publisher and then had no affiliation with The Daily Record. Brown was formerly publisher of the Herald-Leader.

Kent Marts, editor of The Benton County Daily Record, stayed on as editor but also held the position of vice president and general manager of The Benton County Daily Record.
