Panthers, Lady Panthers swimming and diving teams place second in tournament

The Siloam Springs swimming and diving teams got the new year off to a good start.

The Panthers and Lady Panthers each finished in second place at the Siloam Springs Invitational held Thursday at the Hub White Pool inside the Walton Lifetime Health Complex at John Brown University.

Bentonville took first place overall with 1,451 points and was first in the girls division with 682 points and first in the boys division with 769.

The Lady Panthers finished second overall with 372 points, and the Panthers had 543 points for a combined total of 915.

"Both the boys and girls did a great job," said Siloam Springs coach Stephanie Goddard. The boys relays and several individuals are so, so close to state times. I think that a couple of weeks of full practices will make a difference and hopefully we can qualify them at the Bentonville Invitational (on Jan. 29).

"The girls also did very well considering that they were swimming without Kaylee O'Hare."

Rogers finished third overall with 484 points, while Rogers Heritage was fourth at 396, Mountain Home 218, Clarksville 128 and Springdale High 50 in combined scores. The Lady Mounties were third with 247 points, followed by Mountain Home 191, Rogers Heritage 167, Clarksville 68 and Springdale High 50. The Mounties finished third with 237 points, followed by Rogers Heritage 229, Clarksville 60 and Mountain Home 27.

In the girls 200-yard medley relay, the Lady Panthers' team of Catherine Donner, Shannon Kretzer, Clair Gryder and Heather Casteel finished third overall with a time of 2:14.80 and earned 32 points. The team of Mercedes Thompson, Hannah Markovich, Amanda Glass and Caroline Farine placed seventh at 2:32.78 and earned 24 points. The team of Tabitha Eiland, Britain Castagna, Olivia Schaap and Chandler Losh placed eighth and scored 22 points with a time of 2:34.50.

In the boys 200-yard meley relay, the Panthers' team of Benjamin Davis, Hayden Moore, Eduardo Suarez and Jackson Noll placed third overall with a time of 1:56.49 and earned 32 points. The team of Chase Kruger, Ryke Beever, Stephen Grant and Jonathan Little placed seventh with a time of 2:11.54 and scored 24 points. The team of Benjamin Schaap, Zachary Becan, Bobby Norwood and Christian Torres placed eighth at 2:22.08 and scored 22 points.

Brittan Butler finished fifth in the boys 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.72 and scored 14 points. Little placed 10th overall in the event with a time of 2:34.20 and earned seven points.

Glass placed seventh in the girls 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:57.68 and scored 12 points. Thompson placed eighth with a time of 3:08.52 and scored 11 points, while Olivia Schaap placed ninth at 3:14.34 and scored nine points.

Norwood took ninth place in the boys 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:57.77 and scored nine points. Benjamin Schaap took 10th place at 2:59.37 and scored seven points.

Kretzer placed fifth in the girls 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.29 seconds and scored 14 points. Markovich scored three points with a time of 31.40, while Castagna swam a 34.74, Losh 35.42 and Whitney Bunch a 46.23.

Drew McWhorter placed first in the boys 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.61 and scored 20 points. Grant was sixth with a time of 25.31 and scored 13 points. Noll placed seventh and scored 12 points with a time of 25.40, while Beever was 13th with a time of 26.20 and scored four points. Also swimming in the event were Payton Norberg, 29.79; Torres, 30.84; Aaron Jones, 34.89; and Becan, 38.43.

Gryder placed fourth overall in the girls 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:19.69 and scored 15 points. Donner placed sixth and scored 13 points with a time of 1:27.05.

Suarez placed sixth in the boys 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.11 and scored 13 points. Moore placed ninth with a time of 1:09.19 and scored nine points. Kruger placed 11th with a time of 1:20.48 and scored six points, while Nick Woodard placed 12th with a time of 1:24.63 and scored five points.

Farine placed 11th in the girls 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:10.78 and scored six points.

Butler placed third in the boys 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.68 and scored 16 points. Benjamin Davis placed sixth with a time of 56.55 and scored 13 points.

In the girls 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Gryder, Casteel, Farine and Kretzer placed third with a time of 2:00.24 and earned 32 points. The team of Glass, Markovich, Thompson and Donner placed seventh with a time of 2:10.93 and scored 24 points. The team of Losh, Olivia Schaap, Kylyn Ruede and Bunch placed 10th with a time of 2:34.37 and scored 14 points.

In the boys 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Noll, Suarez, Grant and Drew McWhorter placed third overall with a time of 1:40.65 and scored 32 points. The team of Butler, Little, Moore, and Beever placed fifth at 1:44.75 and scored 28 points. The team of Jordan McWhorter, Benjamin Schaap, Torres and Norberg placed eighth with a time of 1:58.01 and scored 22 points. The team of Woodard, Norwood, Becan and Jones placed 12th at 2:13.79 and scored 10 points.

Gryder placed fifth overall in the girls 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:15.58 and scored 14 points.

Davis placed third in the boys 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.96 and scored 16 points. Kruger placed fifth with a time of 1:20.21 and scored 14 points.

Kretzer earned a first-place finish and qualified for state in the girls 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:18.80 and scored 20 points. Ruede placed eighth with a time of 2:10.80 and scored 11 points.

Norberg placed third in the boys 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:32.14 and scored 16 points. Becan placed fifth with a time of 1:38.02 and earned 14 points.

In the girls 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Farine, Donner, Markovich and Casteel finished second with a time of 4:15.57 and scored 34 points. The team of Losh, Olivia Schaap, Eiland and Thompson placed fourth with a time of 5:26.84.

In the boys 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Drew McWhorter, Davis, Suarez and Butler placed second overall with a time of 3:45.29 and scored 34 points. The team of Little, Beever, Grant and Moore placed fifth at 4:12.94 and scored 28 points. The team of Jordan Norberg, Kruger, Benjamin Schaap and Jordan McWhorter placed sixth at 4:34.83 and scored 26 points. The team of Torres, Jones, Woodard and Norwood placed seventh at 5:01.28 and scored 24 points.

Madison Spence placed second in the girls 1-meter diving with score of 177.65 and earned 17 points. Glass was fourth with 160.30 and earned 15 points.

Jones placed first in the boys 1-meter diving with score of 165.10 and earned 20 points. Jordan McWhorter was second at 158.30 and earned 17 points, while Drew McWhorter was third at 143.65 and scored 16 points.

The swimmers and divers return to action on Jan. 29 in the Bentonville Invitational held at the Jones Center in Springdale.
