An 8-year-old girl was honored by the Siloam Springs Fire Department. An engraved plaque commended Amanda Arnold for "exceptional bravery during a fire at her home on Jan. 23, 1985."

Amanda's father, Gilbert Arnold, was in the bathroom washing his son's coat with a solution of detergent, gasoline and hot water. The child came into the room and shut the door. Soon the hot water tank, which was not enclosed, came on. The fumes from the gasoline caused an explosion and locked the Arnolds in the room.

Arnold kicked a panel of the door out and Amanda escaped to get help from her brothers and sister, Jackie, Ricky, Audra, Dwayne and Paul. She also called the operator for assistance in reporting the fire.

Amanda said she learned fire safety rules at Northside elementary, where she was a third-grader. The National Fire Safety Council presented a program to the students which taught Amanda, "If there's a fire and a lot of smoke, get down on the ground and start crawling."

Amanda suffered second-degree burns on about 20 percent of her body and was treated at the Tulsa Burn Center, missing three weeks of school.
