Community garden big build March 28

The Garden in Siloam Springs will hold it's first "big build" event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28.

Everything growing in the new community garden, located behind Grace Episcopal Church, will be free and everyone is welcome to come help plant, then partake in the harvest.

Rain or shine, 13 raised garden beds will be built and the first crop of spring vegetables will be planted. Lunch will be provided free to volunteers who help with the work. Some free "Sliced and Diced" T-shirts will be available and a few new T-shirts and bumper stickers will be offered for sale.

The raised beds, four feet wide and 10 feet long, will be built with cedar boards that are chemical free, according to organizer Patty Gambill. Dawn Denton, owner of Gardens By You and Me, designed the layout of the beds. Spring crops will include carrots, broccoli, cabbage, sugar snap peas, yellow onions, red onions, potatoes, beets, radishes, spinach, celery, cucumbers and eight herbs.

Volunteers are welcome to bring tools such as drills, shovels, wheelbarrows and garden rakes, Gambill said.

"If families want to come without tools that's great, too," she said. "We need as many hands on deck as possible."

The Garden will be accessible around the clock. It will be maintained, but those who use it are encouraged to help weed and water, and to come to garden work days. If people are short on time they can just get what they need, according to Gambill.

The Garden in Siloam Springs launched a Kickstarter campaign last month with the goal of raising $10,000 for garden supplies, fencing, a water meter and signage. The campaign will end at 10:29 p.m. Thursday, March 26. As of Monday, a total of 33 backers had donated $3,256.
