Downtown field trip a fun event

On Friday, Nov. 6, four kindergarten classes from Northside Elementary went on a walking field trip downtown as a culminating activity for our community helpers unit.

We would like to thank the downtown businesses who graciously allowed us to tour their facilities and answer our questions.

Special thanks go to Sager Creek Quilt Shop, Fratelli's Pizzeria, Siloam Flowers and Gifts, and the downtown Arvest Bank.

It was a wonderful learning experience for our kindergarteners and they loved learning about the different ways these individuals positively affect our community.

Thank you again.

VFW Post gives thanks for support

On behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their support during our 75th anniversary celebration. What an accomplishment for the Post to have reached this milestone in our city's history.

Thank you to Mayor John Turner for presenting the Post with a proclamation declaring Nov. 10 as a day of recognition and celebration of the 75th anniversary of VFW Post 1674. Missie Lambert, who represented Senator Boozman's office presented the Post with the Congressional Record from the U.S. Senate along with the flag which was flown over the United States Capitol. Our Siloam Springs Fire Department raised a flag which was flown over the Persian Gulf 1990-91 on the USS Wisconsin BB64.

Thank you to Marci and Taylor Garrett who provided outstanding music for the program. Thanks to Lynetta and Dee for decorating the Post and the Balloon Closet for their help.

Patrick O. Flenniken, Arkansas Department VFW Commander, was the guest speaker along with other Department officials. Past Post Commanders, Ralph Cloyd, Bill Thompson and Steve Milbourn were in attendance and received plaques for their leadership.

We would like to thank the Herald-Leader for their continued support.

We at Post 1674 strive to continue to work in the community by providing assistance to Veterans in need, school scholarship programs, flag etiquette and flag retirement ceremonies and many other projects which provide assistance as needed. After 75 years, we are still an active Post due to dedicated members.

On this Veterans Day, November 11, 2015, I would like to let the community know that now; we have a flag retirement box which was a gift to Post 1674 in recognition of their 75th anniversary. The flag retirement box will provide our city with a place where you may drop off your weathered and worn flags. The box will be installed soon at the VFW Post located at 830 South Lincoln Street in Siloam Springs. Happy Veterans Day to ALL Veterans...past, present and future!

VFW motto: NO ONE DOES MORE FOR VETERANS! God bless our troops...and God bless the U.S.A.!
