Denny named Colcord AD, new football coach hired

COLCORD, Okla. -- Colcord will look to extend its steak of winning football seasons to 20 years this fall, but the Hornets will be doing it under new leadership.

Terrill Denny was promoted to Colcord's athletic director on April 11 in a special school board meeting after serving the district as head football, powerlifting and track coach for the past four seasons.

Curtis Waltman, a former college football player at Villanova and current offensive coordinator at Big Spring (Pa.), was named head football coach.

"My time coaching at Colcord has been outstanding," said Denny, who was also a standout athlete at Colcord. "I've had the privilege to work with some excellent coaches and athletes. The tradition of football that has been built here the last 20 years is something I am very proud to have been a part of. We have had 19 consecutive winning seasons here at Colcord and that is a testament to this school, its leaders, our community and our athletes. I am very proud to be a Hornet and look forward to helping our athletic department as we move forward."

Denny added that this move will also allow him to spend a little more time with his three children: Sebastian, 7, Trace, 2, and Audrey, who will be 1 on Sunday.

Denny came to Colcord as an assistant in 2009 after two years at Vinita (Okla.) and joined the staff of then head coach Bud Simmons, who is now the district's superintendent.

Denny was promoted to head coach in 2012 and led the Hornets to a 32-15 record, four playoff appearances and three playoff wins.

In powerlifting, the Hornets finished as state runner-up two times in 2014 and 2016 and a state championship in 2015.

The Hornets have also been strong in track under Denny's leadership.

Waltman, the Hornets' new coach, is a native of Reading (Pa.) where he graduated from Garden Spot High School and attended Villanova on a football scholarship.

He was all-state in both football and basketball, the conference's football player of the year and 2001 runner-up for basketball's Mr. Pennsylvania. He scored 2,639 career points in basketball, including 1,049 as a senior, averaged 36 points per game as a senior and once scored 60 points in one game. He owns school records in the 100 meters (10.7 seconds) and 200 meters (22.0 seconds).

"(He's an) outstanding athlete in his own right," Denny said.

Waltman was the former offensive coordinator at Hulbert (Okla.) and head coach at Pequea Valley (Pa.).

"Very excited about Coach Waltman and the knowledge and experience he brings to Colcord," Denny said. "He played Division I football at Villanova. He brings a new, exciting perspective to Colcord football."

Waltman will teach math at the middle school.
