Bradley D. Keck, of Siloam Springs, a graduate student at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, won the 1984-85 Nininger Award for the best research paper on meteorites written by a graduate student at a university in the United States.

The award, given by the Center for Meteorite Studies of Arizona State University, consists of a $1,000 prize. Keck's paper described his research on the amount of light emitted as a meteorite is heated in the laboratory. The amount of light is determined by the amount of heating the meteorite underwent as part of a large planet-like body in space. Keck's paper confirmed the importance of this phase in the history of the CO chondrite class of meteorites.

Keck, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orin D. Keck, presented the paper at the 17th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The Nininger Award was established by Harvey H. Nininger, a well-known collector of meteorites and a founder-member of the Meteoritical Society, the professional organization of meteorite researchers.

The 5-minute-long special Siloam Springs Planning Commission meeting ended with smiles after the only item on the agenda was approved.

Commissioners recommended rezoning 28 acres of agricultural land to commercial property for a Lowe's at 3499 U.S. Highway 412 east of Walmart Supercenter. Members of the Siloam Springs Board of Directors planned to vote on the rezoning permit on the following Tuesday.

Cassandra Olverson, city planner, said the meeting was called so the rezoning permit could make the next city board agenda.

A 100,000-square-foot Lowe's was planned for the property there. City Administrator David Cameron previously said that the home improvement store expected to open January 2007.
