Panthers salvage final day at Republic

REPUBLIC, Mo -- On the heels of a tough 66-59 loss to Rogers Heritage on Friday, the Siloam Springs boys basketball team found a way to bounce back on Saturday in the final day of the 52nd annual Republic (Mo.) Boys Basketball Tournament.

The Panthers built up a 16-point lead in the seventh-place game against Rolla (Mo.), only to lose to the lead in the third quarter. Siloam Springs, however, scrapped back and pulled out a 67-64 win against Rolla.

"Very proud of our guys' resilience this weekend," said Siloam Springs boys coach Tim Stewart. "After a tough overtime loss to Heritage on Friday night, we bounced back, played a super tough Rolla team and pulled out a three-point win."

The Panthers (2-4) led Rolla 38-29 at halftime and extended that margin in the third quarter, but with 25 seconds remaining the Panthers trailed by one.

"That's where we showed some toughness," Stewart said.

Senior post's Josh Hunt scored a layup with six seconds left to give the Panthers the lead for good.

Hunt finished with 18 points on three 3-pointers, while senior guard Charlie Jones hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points. Senior Noah Karp chipped in 12 points, while senior Harrison Kretzer added nine, junior Spencer Lashley seven and seniors Omar Vazquez and Josh Heinrichs scored three and two points, respectively.

The Panthers returned to action Tuesday against Pryor, Okla., in the opening round of the Jerry Oquin Invitational in Inola, Okla. Results were not available at presstime.

The tournament will continue on either Thursday or Friday, depending on Tuesday's result. It will conclude on Saturday.
