The Illinois River Watershed Project and Siloam Springs teamed up to promote water safety and environmental stewardship on Saturday.

The two groups hosted the sixth annual Illinois River Splash Day. This year it was help at the kayak park. The event featured music, free food and informational displays from a variety of different organizations.

The event, which Becky Roark of the IRWP said started out as a hang-out event designed to get people out to the river to enjoy themselves, has evolved into a fun event that also focuses on safety and environmental responsibility.

Several recreational outfitters were present. Guests could try out kayaks for free if they signed a waiver. There was also an emphasis on safety, with instructions and demonstrations given on several different swift water rescue techniques.

"This is about getting people an idea of what to do if they are in that situation," Roark said. The more you know, the safer you can be."
