Arkansans celebrated their state's 150th birthday during the Salute to Statehood weekend June 13-15, but Siloam Springs residents didn't come out to share in the celebration and the city's events, by and large, flopped.

Scheduled activities consisted of a People Parade and Indian Powwow, a Downtown Carnival, a square dancing presentation by the Arkoma Whirlaways, a Picnic in City Park, Ice Cream Social, Ms. Pioneer Days and Beard Growing Contest. Also, churches and individuals participated in the state's "Chimes and Cheers" celebration by ringing bells every hour on the hour from 1-8 p.m. on Sunday.

Jason Kelly, the father of three, seemed like a father to many.

The Arkansas Baptist News named Kelly, the pastor of student ministry at First Baptist Church in Siloam Springs, its 2006 Father of the Year.

Kelly's wife, Julie, nominated her husband, the father of Judd, 3, Jensen, 12, and Jackson, who would be 10 the next month.

"She wrote an awesome letter I guess, which I don't necessarily see all the things she said, but she does and that's all that counts," Kelly said.

Kelly, who came to First Baptist Church 18 months earlier, headed the church's Revolution Student Ministry and still made time to spend a lot of time with his children.
