Family Aquatic Center opens for summer

The Family Aquatic Center will complete its first weekend of the summer with Memorial Day weekend.

Opening weekend will see a few new changes to the city-run swimming facility. First, there has been a change to the rates for the 2016 season.

Rates across the board have seen a $30 drop for annual memberships. A pass for up to four now costs $135, down from $165. A year-long youth pass or a senior pass both cost $60 and an adult pass is $70.

The other change for the season is that the food provider for the concession stand has changed. This year, the Carsten family, which operates several concession stands at the Dogwood Festival every year, will be in charge of the concessions at the Family Aquatic Center, said Parks and Recreation manager, Troy Kirkendall.

The center also offers swimming lessons in June and July, a members-only swim time every Saturday and free reservation of any of the three pavilions on the facility. The facility will also play host to a "dive in movie" in August where a film will be shown on a large screen at the edge of the pool.
