Praying to Heaven's God

When I recently re-watched the HBO series "John Adams," I was struck by the frequent appearance of the Appeal to Heaven flag. That flag, first used by George Washington, was a symbol to our forefathers of their dependence on God. They openly acknowledged that they needed help from heaven's God to become a free nation.

Three weeks ago I gathered with several hundred Christians in Little Rock, where this same theme played out -- prayer for our nation. The Appeal to Heaven flag was on display. America is in trouble and the answers are beyond our human ability.

When General Washington led our nation's army, they were hopelessly outnumbered by superior forces. The British even hired dreaded Hessian mercenaries, intending to wipe out our weak army. Washington relied on God's help and prayed, but he also took bold, brave action. In the dead of winter, he attacked first!

He crossed the Delaware to attack the Hessian troops garrisoned at Trenton. Washington had zero casualties, no injured soldiers, plus he took 900 prisoners and many weapons. It was a turning point for America.

America needs a turning point like that, where the forces that intend to destroy our nation are soundly defeated and stripped of their weapons. God is on the side of what is right and true and just. Will we be brave?

Does it matter which God? Yes, it does! In the real world, evil powers, lying spirits, and false gods crave allegiance. They have deceived and enslaved big portions of humanity.

The Bible shows us that the One True God of heaven is the Father of Jesus, who is God's Son. In America, our land has been blessed, cleansed, and devoted to the God of the Bible. If we pray, if we Appeal to Heaven, it has to be done to the correct Lord.

Pluralism, or a belief in many legitimate gods, is idolatry. For America,, any old god will not do.
