Writers Guild announces poetry contest

The Siloam Springs Writers Guild announces the 2017 chapter of the annual Roy Chesney Fund Siloam Springs Poem of the Year contest. The Roy Chesney Fund sponsors this award to honor local authorship of poetry and to promote appreciation of the fine arts, especially those which draw attention to nature and its beauties.

Awards will be -- first place, $75 cash; second place $50 Eureka Pizza gift certificate; and third place, $25 cash.

Anyone within a 10-mile radius of Siloam Springs or a member of SSWG is eligible to enter previously unpublished poetry. One entry may be submitted without charge -- for each of, possibly two, additional entries, a $3 per entry contribution will be required. Though an entrant may enter up to three poems, he or she is eligible for only one award. Poetic style, form, and length are of the author's choice. The theme for this year's entry is "This Land."

Entries will be accepted through Aug. 31. Hard copies must be accompanied with a $5 re-typing fee per entry and be postmarked by Aug. 26. Entry by email is definitely preferred.

1. Anyone within a 10-mile radius of Siloam Springs or a member of SSWG is eligible to enter. Poem of the year entries are to be original works of the submitter, having been neither published nor awarded as a winner in: the SSWG POY contest nor any state, or larger, regional entity.

2. Each entry should include a cover page with the title of the entry, the first two lines of the poem, "Poem of the Year Contest, 2017," submitter's name and email or USPS address.

3. The author's name should not appear on any of the poem's pages.

4. The title of each entry should appear two inches from the top on its first page and cover page.

5. The poem should be typed in Times New Roman 12 point font.

6. Entries are to be free of obscene language.

7. Each entry will be emailed as an attachment to [email protected] with "Poem of the Year Contest, 2017" in the "Subject:" field. The attached file is to be in ".DOC," ".DOCX," ".RTF," or ".TXT" format.

8. Send USPS entries, multiple-entries fees, and re-typing fees to Siloam Springs Writers Guild, 1600 Rosewood Lane, Siloam Springs, AR 72761.

9. Submission will be made by email through Aug. 31 or by USPS through Aug. 26.

10. Awards will be announced at an award ceremony Oct. 9.

Siloam Springs Writers Guild is temporarily meeting in Room 120, downstairs, west side, of First Baptist Church, 2000 Dawn Hill Road, Siloam Springs, Ark., at 6 p.m., second Monday of each month. All interested writers and friends of writers are welcome.
