More than 800 farm ponds were constructed in Benton County during the previous 10 years through the Agricultural Conservation Program. The primary purpose of the ponds was to provide water for livestock and to make possible the proper distribution of grazing. Secondary purposes included fishing, swimming and other recreational uses.

The farm pond program for 1967 was expanded to include uses other than livestock water. ACP cost shares were offered for the construction of farm ponds to be used for poultry water and other related agricultural uses. Ponds for livestock water could then be constructed in pastures or feed lots.

Through the ACP the government offered to share about 50 percent of the cost of such construction.
