Northside addition bids opened

Bids for the Northside Elementary School addition were opened on Thursday and fell in line with expected costs, according to assistant superintendent Jody Wiggins.

Wiggins and Mike Spaeth, of BiLD Architects, presented a report about the bid opening to school board members on Thursday evening. Wiggins and Spaeth said the bids had yet to be vetted and will not be ready for board approval until next week.

Seven companies attended a mandatory walk-through of the project last Monday, and three submitted bids, Wiggins said. Crossland Construction of Rogers, Southern Building Services of Fort Smith and SSI of Tontitown were among those who bid on the project.

Bids were in line with expected costs and ranged from from $177 per square foot to $211 per square foot, with SSI taking the low bid, Spaeth said. The company has done several projects at the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith and some other projects in Northwest Arkansas, he reported.

Spaeth will be meeting with SSI on Monday to go over bid numbers and make sure everything is in order, he said. After the bid is vetted, the school board will schedule a special meeting sometime next week to approve bid, Wiggins said.

The approximately 5,500-square-foot addition will be located where the current playground sits, and will include four prekindergarten classrooms. The playground will be relocated to west of the gym.

Each of the 850- to 860-square-foot classrooms will have their own restrooms, cabinets and cubbies. The addition will be paid for by a $500,000 grant from the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, with the balance coming from school district funds.
