Five of John Brown University's athletic programs were honored with the Sooner Athletic Conference Team Academic Award, while a trio of programs led their respective sports, the conference office announced June 27.

The Team Academic Awards, presented by Cypress Risk Management, is given annually to each sport's team whose student-athletes achieve the highest combined grade-point average in conference-sponsored sports. Team GPA is computed based on all team members certified for eligibility in a given season and will include their cumulative GPA for the entire academic year.

Men's and women's cross country, women's soccer, women's basketball and volleyball each earned a slot on the impressive list. Women's cross country boasted a 3.58 team GPA, which not only led all JBU teams across all sports, but led all women's cross country programs in the conference. Women's soccer's 3.53 mark led all conference programs as well while men's cross country finished with a 3.50 GPA, tied with Wayland Baptist (Texas) for the top slot.

A total of 48 teams from all 13 conference-sponsored sports had at least a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Women's basketball had the most with seven teams at that mark or higher.
