# Arkansas Shootout Championship played in Springdale

"Our bats woke up in the fifth and sixth inning," said Post 29 assistant coach Drew England, who was serving as manager with Alan Hardcastle out of town. "I was proud of our guys. They battled. They fought back. They didn't give up."

Coming off a pair of 5-1 and 5-2 wins Tuesday night at Prairie Grove, Siloam Springs only managed a pair of base hits over the first four innings.

Springdale, meanwhile, scored three runs in the top of the first inning of starter Landon Nickell. The big blow in the inning was a two-run double by Austin Wages.

Nickell was relieved by Chance Junkermann in the second inning, and he got out of a jam to keep the score at 3-0. Junkermann pitched a scoreless third before giving up one run in the fourth as Springdale pulled ahead 4-0.

"I thought the first five innings was kind of a tale of two cities for us," England said. "(Tuesday) night we went over to Prairie Grove and swept two games and really played well fundamentally and hit the ball. (Wednesday), we were sluggish coming out of the gate, walked some guys, didn't get ahead of guys. They got some base runners on."

Springdale was threatening for more in the fifth when they loaded the bases against reliever Reed Wilbanks.

Wilbanks got the second out of the inning with a strikeout, and a Springdale runner was picked off to end the inning with no more runs scored.

"We made some great, timely plays in the field," England said, "Got out of a bases-loaded jam there, just proud of them."

Escaping the jam in the top of the fifth seemed to give the Panthers a jolt of energy in the bottom half of the inning.

Chance Wilburn led off the inning with a double, and Jacob Rowe was hit by a pitch with two outs to set up runners on first and second.

Isaac Price ripped a two-run double into the left-center field gap to cut Springdale's lead to 4-2.

After Wilbanks pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning, Post 29 went back to work with the bats in the bottom of the sixth.

Newcomer Trey Gettys singled and stole second base. He then scored on Landon Ellis' RBI single to make it 4-3.

Ellis stole second base as well and he scored on Nickell's RBI double to left to tie the game 4-4.

Nickell scored to give the Panthers a 5-4 lead on an RBI single by Baron Meek. Wilbanks also singled and Rowe reached on an error to bring Price to the plate.

Price blooped a two-run single into right-center field to put Post 29 ahead 7-4. Price finished with three hits and four RBIs batting out of the No. 10-hole as the extra hitter. Siloam Springs only had 10 players available for the game.

"It was a team effort," England said. "That's what we need on a night like this, especially with nine or 10 guys. You need everybody to contribute, and everybody did. Isaac Price came through with two big clutch hits. I think he had four RBIs. We had Chance Hilburn hit a couple. He got it started (in the fifth). Landon hit a couple of good base hits. It was a team effort. Everybody contributed."

Gettys, who recently moved back to Northwest Arkansas after living in Washington, took over on the mound in the the seventh and the left-hander pitched a perfect inning to earn the save.

"Trey Gettys joined our team (Tuesday)," England said. "He came back from Washington state, started on the mound for us and pitched a couple of innings (against Prairie Grove) and hit really well. He's a great addition to our team -- another lefty for us."

Wilbanks earned the victory for Post 29 with two scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth.

Siloam Springs Post 29 was back in action Thursday and picked up a pair of wins with a doubleheader sweep at Lincoln 15-0 and 12-1. The wins improved Siloam Springs to 8-5-1 on the season.
