One month into retirement, Rose Cheek-Willis hasn't had trouble keeping busy.

The legendary Siloam Springs volleyball coach retired from teaching and coaching at the end of this past school year after 36 years, 566 wins and seven state championships.

"You'd think that I would be resting," she said, "but I've been busy with gardening and yard work. I have a massive garden with lots of vegetables. ... To keep it up and keep it looking nice, it's work but it's fun."

But Cheek-Willis isn't quite done from coaching just yet.

She's got at least one match left to coach, and that will take place tonight in the Arkansas High School Coaches Association All-Star Volleyball Game. The match will be played at 6 p.m. in the Farris Center on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

Cheek-Willis will be the head coach for the West All-Stars.

"I think after 38 years of coaching, it'll be like riding a horse," she said. "I'll get right back on that sucker and if you get thrown off the horse you get right back on."

Cheek-Willis has participated in the All-Star match on numerous occasions as both head coach and assistant coach.

She'll be joined on the West staff by Patricia Glover of Malvern, Trista Killingsworth of Green Forest and April Mattix of Harrison.

Before school let out, she said she made copies of a lot of the Lady Panthers' drills and got down some ideas. The All-Stars convened in Conway on Monday and had several practices before participating in tonight's game.

Cheek-Willis won't be coaching any of her former players tonight. Andrea Lowry, a senior libero for the Lady Panthers this past season, was selected to play in the game but was unable to participate. Current Lady Panthers Shaylon Sharp and Chloe Price were both at one time in line to serve as the team's manager for the week, but both ended up having to withdraw.

"I don't have anybody from Siloam and that's OK," Cheek-Willis said. "I'll get to know some of these other girls."

Some of the players on the West All-Stars include several players Cheek-Willis has coached against over the years, including 6-4 middle Madi Pfeifer of Greenwood, Kathryn Charlson of Bentonville, Abbie Kathel and Faith Waitsman of Fayetteville and Peyton Knight and Jessica Pratt of Harrison. Also on the team are Springdale Har-Ber's Emily Doss and Arika Johnson, who played for Cheek-Willis as a sophomore at Siloam Springs.

"That's gonna be good, just to meet some of these girls," Cheek-Willis said. "The big girl from Greenwood is a nice kid. Getting to know me on a different level I think could be fun. I'm looking forward to it."
