Kidd breaks goals record

Each year more former residents came back to Siloam Springs for the Founders Day picnic, which was held in the Siloam Springs Park on June 24. That year there were 160 registered, which did not include everyone, as many did not sign the register. The previous year there were 120 who registered.

Also, KUOA's engineers installed a PA system, which was a big improvement over past years and was greatly appreciated.

Mayor Clarence Spears gave the welcome address and the president, Arthur Shields, who presided, introduced the speaker, Dr. Caldeen Gunter. Dr.Gunter's ancestors were among the earliest settlers in this territory and through their ledgers, papers, letters, etc., much of the history of Siloam Springs was preserved. His talk was on the very early history of this area. One of the events which was of great interest was the organization of the Siloam Springs Masonic Lodge, on St. John's Day (June 24) in 1854. It was the third Masonic organization in this area. The first one was organized in Maysville and the second in Bentonville.

Georgia Elrod, a Siloam Springs attorney, was appointed by Gov. Bill Clinton to a commission whose duties included the review of the state's early release program for inmates of state prisons.

The Commission on Arkansas Probation, Parole and Sentencing Procedures, on which Elrod would serve, worked to promote consistency and fairness in the application of laws and to determine whether the state should expand usage of alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders.

Specifically, the commission was asked to determine changes which were needed and to recommend them to the Governor and the General Assembly after doing a number of tasks the commission had listed as guidelines.

Sarah Kidd scored 101 goals in her four-year high school career at Siloam Springs.

That statistic was a school record for boys and girls soccer that may never be broken.

Max Habereder, Kidd's soccer coach at Ingram Futbol Club, suspected that Kidd might be an even bigger scoring threat playing club soccer with the U18 Saints.
