The Clarke Company, a Siloam Springs manufacturer of surface cleaning equipment located on Arkansas Highway 59, announced plans to move its plant to Springdale. As a result, the city lost about 160 jobs when the plant moved in 12-18 months.

The company's decision to move "was entirely economic," James Mills, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Clarke, announced from the company's Muskegon, Mich., central office.

Jim Taylor, Plant Manager of the Siloam Springs facility, said that the City of Siloam Springs and the Siloam Springs Chamber of Commerce "worked with us very long and very hard" to keep the plant in the city, but the economic factors surrounding the company's decision to move were "beyond their control or our control."

Nine-year-old Madison Spence was serious about her gymnastics. At the state competition in Little rock -- the River City Classic -- Spence won the overall award for highest point-total of all Level 4 gymnasts, ages 4-12.

Spence, who would celebrate her 10th birthday in less than a week, started gymnastics at Upward Bound in Siloam Springs about two years prior. Kristen Shaw, director of Upward Bound, told Spence's parents, Jason and Jodie Spence, that their daughter should be placed into competitive gymnastics.

In all seven meets in the 2006-07 season, Spence not only placed, but finished at the top of her team for all Level 4 ages. Her best overall score of the season was 37.6 from a possible 40. Her lowest was 35.3 and her average was about 36.5.
