Children at Bright Beginnings Preschool searched downtown Siloam Springs for a mischievous leprechaun on Saint Patrick's day.

When children arrived at school on Friday morning, they found that a leprechaun had mysteriously entered their play areas, creating mischief and mayhem, according to school director Debbie Mays.

The leprechaun had turned over chairs, scattered toys around and left little green footprints everywhere. He even left a note, daring children to "Catch me if you can."

Children, accompanied by a few parents, went on a walking field trip through downtown, following clues left by the illusive leprechaun, Mays said. The treasure hunt is a lot of fun for the kids and business owners alike, she said.

"The annual leprechaun hunt is a tradition that children love at Bright Beginnings," Mays said.

The clues led the group to one downtown business after another. For example, the clue left at Cafe on Broadway read "He did stop here and get a cookie or a treat, then he continued running down the middle of the street. He left a cookie for each of you to enjoy while you rest, then continue on your hunt and do your best. I heard him say he was going to get more cash, where could that be? Go in a flash!"

At the end of the treasure hunt, the children finally discovered a pot of gold filled with gold coins, necklaces and candy wrapped in gold paper.
