JBU men can't hold lead at City

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Armed with a 1-0 lead late in the contest, the John Brown University men's soccer let a much-needed victory slip away as Oklahoma City scored with 7 minutes, 7 seconds left in regulation and then converted a penalty kick in double overtime as the Stars took a 2-1 decision over the Golden Eagles on Tuesday evening at Stars Field.

Both teams had opportunities to score as JBU (8-6-1, 4-3-1 Sooner Athletic) launched 13 shots, five on target, while City (12-3-1, 5-2-1) let 14 shots go, four of which found the target.

The Golden Eagles jumped to a 1-0 lead when junior Ryan Williams' pass up the right flank sprung senior Marco Cardona in close to City keeper Vladimir Kalajdzic for a 1-0 John Brown advantage. The goal was Carona's fourth of the season.

That lead stuck and as the last minutes began to count down, the Stars earned a free kick near midfield on the left wing. City's Logan Stewart played a ball into the box that bounced around, but eventually found Petar Djurdjevic at the back post for his second of the season.

In a match that saw JBU hold a commanding 10-4 corner kick advantage, the Golden Eagles could not convert throughout overtime. Finally, the Stars worked a ball inside the box and forced John Brown to bite at a challenge.

Junior Steve Teshima was whistled for a yellow near the outskirts of the box for a foul, which allowed Alexandre Taiar to take a penalty kick attempt with just 59 seconds left in the match.

Taiar made no mistake, netting his seventh of the year, beating senior Adam Holt to the bottom corner. Holt guessed correctly and caught a piece of the shot, but the ball slipped underneath the sprawling keeper for the deciding strike.

Junior Kelvin Omondi led all Golden Ealges with three shots while five other player attempted a pair towards the hosts' goal. Djurdjevic paced all player with four shots.

The Golden Eagles returned to action on Saturday against Southwestern Christian (Okla.) at Alumni Field. Results were not available at presstime.

JBU plays Tuesday at Science and Arts (Okla.).
