Redman's goal stands up against Stars

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Junior Jastin Redman scored on the first shot of the contest and the tally held up as the No. 19 John Brown University women's soccer team edged past Oklahoma City by a 1-0 final on Tuesday afternoon at Stars Field.

The goal in the fifth minute was Redman's 13th of the season and her second game-winner. Redman stole the ball on the right flank, navigated through a pair of Stars defenders and, while in tight with OCU keeper Kirsten Thomas, she chipped a shot from four yards with the left foot off the post, off Thomas and in, accounting for the entirety of the scoring in the match.

The Golden Eagles (14-2-0, 8-0-0 Sooner Athletic), which have won nine straight, almost doubled its lead in the 41st minute when an offensive flurry saw freshman Sienna Nealon ring a shot off the post, while senior Hannah Poor followed up with the rebound off the post. Instead of a 2-0 commanding lead, JBU settled for a one-goal advantage at the intermission.

Freshman Maggie Allen, given the opportunity to play the full 90 minutes, came up big for John Brown in the second half, including a diving save on City's Sara Ricks in close in the 51st minute.

Finishing with three saves, Allen was credited with her first-career collegiate shutout, while moving to 8-0-0 on the season. Thomas also made three saves, but suffered the loss in goal for the Stars.

"We are always grateful to get a result on the road, especially against a good side like City," head coach Kathleen Paulsen noted. "We didn't play the best soccer this afternoon and we definitely walked away with some things to work on. As always, we're already looking towards our next match on Saturday."

JBU out-shot the hosts 8-3, led by Redman's four shots. Three players each had one shot apiece for the hosts.

JBU returned to action Saturday at home against Southwestern Christian in the final regular season home match. Results were not available at presstime.

JBU is scheduled to play its regular season finale Tuesday at Science and Arts (Okla.).
