An unusual collection of cups, belonging to Mrs. Delbert Allen Jr., was the attraction in the library showcase during the month of February. The display included a Japanese doll, fans, antique carnival glass and a treasured family vase.

A brown and yellow-checked mug and the reddish-brown vase from Sweden were the oldest items in the collection and came from her maternal grandmother.

Two of the cups were made in Mexico and two were handmade in New Mexico by Indian craftsmen. There was also an English cup and many others in an interesting array of size, shape, design and color. One of the most unusual cups in the collection was made in Japan and when held to the light showed clearly the lovely face of a Japanese woman in the bottom of the cup. The fans, which were quite old, were handed down in the family.

Mrs. Allen began her collection as a child with the cups, which were handed down through her mother's family members. Friends and family members, knowing her interest in old and unusual cups, added to the collection.

Siloam Springs' Betty Johnson was honored as the overall women's winner of the 1987 Northwest Arkansas Grand Prix Racing Series at a banquet held at the Fayetteville Holiday Inn.

Runners participating in the Grand Prix Series received points based on time differential between their times for specific distance and the national record in their age group for that distance. To qualify for the Grand Prix title, runners had to compete in one Grand Prix 5K, one 5 mile, one 15K and two 10K races.

Johnson scored 3,508 points, easily outdistancing second place finisher Willa Hayworth of Fayetteville.

David Briggs of Bentonville was the overall male champion, scoring 1,284 points.

Charlie Rennard of Siloam Springs placed third in the men's 35-39 age group and wife Katie Rennard placed second in the women's 35-39 age group.

Raquel Beck, director of St. Francis Clinic, accepted a donation of more than $2,600 from Misti Coleman-Stephens and Suellen Coleman at the Siloam Springs Council of Realtors' annual Christmas banquet and silent auction. Coleman-Stephens, with Coldwell Banker Faucette, was named 2007 Realtor of the Year at the event.
