Spring clean-up scheduled

From Staff Reports

Springtime means it's time for the city's semi-annual clean-up initiative.

The week of April 9 has been designated for the Siloam Springs Spring Clean-Up. On each resident's usual trash/recycling day that week, they can place bulk household items that won't fit in their trash bins by the curb for pickup.

This includes appliances that do not use Freon such as air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators, water coolers and some dehumidifiers. Furniture, mattresses, large toys, lawn furniture and various other items also are included.

Residents are encouraged to bag or box up as many items as possible, according to city communications manager Holland Hayden. Tires, electronics, paints, chemicals, batteries, oils, fluorescent light bulbs and appliances with Freon must be taken to Benton County's Satellite Drop-Off Center at 1108 East Ashley in Siloam Springs.

In addition, the city's sanitation division will pick up items like artificial Christmas trees, entertainment centers, old above-ground pools, sinks and tubs. Crews will even pick-up building materials, although that's limited to two-cubic yards, or about the size of the bed of a typical pickup truck.

This is for home residents only and is not for commercial, industrial or non-profit businesses, or multi-family apartments or condominiums. The service also will not pick up any items left in front of an empty lot.

Be sure to put the items within six-feet of the curb by 7 a.m. on your normal trash/recycling pickup day, and items left in alleys or side streets will not be picked up. The city is encouraging residents to put items out the night before pickup, but not before Saturday, April 7.

Be aware of power lines or tree limbs above where items are placed and do not put the items within four feet of your regular trash/recycling bin because of the truck used to remove the items. Also be sure not to block any sidewalks, right-of-way streets or mailboxes.

If items do not qualify for pickup, they will be left behind and removal will be the responsibility of the resident.

The city's next clean-up will be this fall.
