A Siloam Springs man was arrested in connection with a felony domestic battery charge after police received a report that he had assaulted his mother.

Officer Travis Luper of the Siloam Springs Police Department responded to 1020 W. Granite Street on Sept. 10, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed on Sept. 11. Luper was responding to a report that George Stephens, 50, hit his mother in the chest and face.

Upon arrival to the residence, Luper stated that Stephens was outside at the front door attempting to unlock it with a key, according to the affidavit. Stephens ignored Luper's requests to step away from the door and after getting within 10 to 15 feet of Stephens, Luper noticed a flashlight and knife in Stephen's hand, prompting him to remove his firearm from his holster while keeping it pointed at the ground, the affidavit states.

Additional officers arrived on scene to assist Luper shortly thereafter, at which time he was able to obtain possession of the knife and speak to Stephen's mother inside the home, according to the affidavit. The woman told Luper that she and her son got into a verbal argument relating to a bag of dog food, and said that it is common for him to get abnormally upset over trivial things. She further stated that the argument became physical after Stephens began "thumping" her in the chest, nearly knocking her to the ground.

After an attempt to push him back, the woman said that he struck her with a closed fist on the left side of her face and then went outside, at which point she closed and locked the door before calling a friend, according to the affidavit. She had red coloration in her eye, the affidavit states. When Luper asked Stephens why he went outside, he said he was going to his vehicle to get his knife and flashlight because he had plans to die from "suicide by cop," and that he had intentions of attacking Luper once he arrived.

Stephens was arrested for domestic battering in the second degree, according to the affidavit. Witnesses told police that Stephens has suffered from mental issues over the course of his life in addition to having made threats and assaulted his mother before.

Stephens was in custody at the Benton County Jail as of Friday, with a bond in the amount of $7,500. His court date is scheduled for Oct. 22.
