The Siloam Springs School Board was informed by Asst. Superintendent Beverly Reed that the school system had been awarded an $8,000 grant from the state Education Department to disseminate information on a program being utilized at Northside Elementary.

The program traces each student's development in six basic skill areas. Reed said the funds would be used to produce copies of a computer program used by the school and to write a manual and a brochure on the basic skills program. Packages would then be distributed to interested school systems throughout the state, she said.

The grant received by Siloam Springs Public Schools was the largest monetary grant offered by the state department.

Siloam Springs head soccer coach Jason Bowen had every right to have a smile on his face.

The Panthers, under his superb coaching, were 6-0 in Conference 5A West following an 11-0 win over Vilonia.

On Monday, Bowen had another reason to smile.

The National Federation of High School Coaches named Bowen the 2007 Arkansas Boys Soccer Coach of the Year.

According to Siloam Springs athletic director Kerwin Dees, Bowen had led the Panthers to the 5A State Boys' Soccer finals two of the past three years including the 2007 season.

"This is a tremendous recognition and honor for Coach Bowen, the SSHS soccer kids and program and Siloam Springs High School," Dees added.
