JBU men's tennis defeats OKWU

The John Brown University men's tennis team moved to 2-0 on the season against NAIA competition as the Golden Eagles ran away with an 8-1 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan in its home opener on Tuesday afternoon at the JBU Tennis Courts.

Sophomores Mitchell Berry and Samuel Spencer remained undefeated on the year with an 8-2 win over Alberto Picchi and Alex Lebrisse at the second slot. The freshman duo of Woody Woodring and Logan Wheeler posted a quick 8-1 result at the bottom flight to improve to 3-2 on the year while senior Nathan Kuykendall and sophomore Cade Cox evened out to 4-4 on the year with another 8-3 win at the top flight.

Woodring and Wheeler notched dominant scores and five and six singles, respectively, to wrap up the match for the Golden Eagles before Cox posted his sixth singles win of the year at number two with a clean sweep of Mason Lane. Kuykendall, who has manned the top flight all season, grabbed his second individual win of 2018-19 with a 6-1, 6-4, decision over Calhoun.

Berry tied Cox for the best overall individual mark among all Golden Eagles (6-2) with his first cleen sweep of the year over Lebrisse. OKWU (0-3) managed to grab one point in the final matchup of the afternoon, the third slot, when Picchi overcame Spencer's first-set win with a 6-3 second-set score before prevailing in the tiebreak, 10-6.

Both the JBU men's and women's teams were defeated 9-0 on Thursday in Shawnee, Okla.
