City Board approves submitting taxi grant application

The city's board of directors approved submitting a grant application that will replace a city-owned taxi for the transportation service that aides the elderly and disabled during its meeting Tuesday.

Should the application be approved, the city will be awarded an 80/20 grant from the Arkansas Department of Transportation, which it intends to use to replace a 2007 Dodge Caravan. The estimated cost of the vehicle is $27,940. Under the grant, the city would be responsible for 20 percent or $5,588.

The grant will be awarded in 2020, but the deadline for application is May 6, 2019.

The board also heard the administrator's report. According to Phillip Patterson, city administrator, the electric department spent $33,000 in inventory and $32,000 for tree trimming services. Both are one time expenses, Patterson said. Patterson also reported March sales tax for the city was down 0.6 percent.

In other business, the board:

• Placed an amendment to the city municipal code on its second reading. This amendment would rezone 303 S. Country Club Road from a light industrial roadway to commercial.

• Placed an amendment to the city municipal code on its first reading an ordinance to make discretionary purchases without competitive bidding.

• Approved a resolution that declared community planning as a professional service.

The board also reported there was an estimated 234 tons of trash picked up during the spring clean-up week.
