‘Pickin’ Time returns this weekend

Vendors will set up again at the airport for the second annual Pickin’ Time on 59 starting Thursday.

The event is a 25-mile-long sale that runs through five towns along Arkansas Highway 59, from Siloam Springs to the Missouri state line.

The sale at Siloam Springs Municipal Airport will take place from sunrise to sunset Thursday through Sunday.

Items such as power tools, antiques, furniture, fruits and vegetables, rocks and lawn equipment will be on sale.

As of last week, more than 20 vendors had signed up to have a booth there, said Kathy Turner, coordinator for the Siloam Springs sale.

“There’s plenty of room,” Turner said. “We hope there’s more vendors.”

Turner said vendors won’t be required to pay any fees to set up at the airport. On Sept. 3, the city board suspended the permit and insurance require-ments for the event.

Because the Siloam Springs sale is in an open field, vendors will need to bring a canopy if they would like shade. Turner said that vendors can drive their vehicles up to their booth.

Joan Michael of Siloam Springs said she will bring small items, household stuff and antiques. She plans to bring a hope chest that is about 90 years old.

“The last time we did (Pickin’ Time on 59), it was a lot of fun,” Michael said. “I’m surprised how much everybody had to display.”

She also plans to bring a gaming table with sides that fold down so it can be slid up against a wall.

“It’s fairly good size once you open it up,” Michael said.

Darl Patterson of Siloam Springs will return again for the sale this year.

Patterson said he buys broken or used lawn mowers and repairs them. He will bring push mowers to the sale. He also will have lawn trimmers and tools, power tools, chain saws, fishing equipment and pots and pans.

“I’m retired,” Patterson said. “And this just gets me something to do.”

Patterson encouraged people to come out.

“Let’s make this a big business,” Patterson said. “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”

Sheila Reynolds of Siloam Springs enjoys the atmosphere at the sale.

Reynolds said she will bring her watercolor paintings to sell.

She has a flip-through file that people can browse. She has 25 to 30 prints.

“I’ve been painting all my life,” Reynolds said. She started to paint with watercolors 10 years ago.

Reynolds said her husband will bring his tools and saws to sell. Her booth will also include atable saw and furniture.

“I love it that’s there’s parking there,” Reynolds said. “It’s just really good.”

Last year, 27 vendors sold items at the sale in Siloam Springs.

Because the event includes other towns along Arkansas Highway 59, Turner said that people can drive to the sale here and then go for barbecue or other items at the sales in towns all the way to Sulphur Springs.

Turner said that if the event grows to even a quarter of the size of similar sales such as in Canton, Texas, it would have a “complete area effect.”

Pickin’ Time on 59 is sponsored by Siloam Springs Chamber of Commerce, Gentry Chamber of Commerce, Decatur Chamber of Commerce, Gravette Chamber of Commerce and Sulphur Springs Chamber of Commerce.

“I just encourage the public to come out and enjoy,” Turner said. “You never know what you are going to find.”
