Swimmers take 2nd in final 2014 meet

The Siloam Springs swim and dive teams finished the 2014 portion of their schedule on a strong note.

The Panthers and Lady Panthers combined for nine first place finishes Monday and the teams combined to finish second overall at the Siloam Springs Invitational held at the Hub White Pool inside the the Walton Lifetime Health Complex at John Brown University.

Conway finished first overall with 1,141 combined points, while Siloam Springs had 1,092, followed by Rogers with 412, Rogers Heritage 406, Clarksville 340, Russellville 284 and Springdale 88.

Conway finished first in the girls portion with 694 points, while Siloam Springs had 483, Rogers 210, Rogers Heritage 173, Clarksville 145, Russellville 103 and Springdale 62.

Siloam Springs finished first in the boys division with 609 points, followed by Conway 447, Rogers Heritage 233, Rogers 202, Clarksville 195, Russellville 181 and Springdale 26.

"Swimmers and divers did a great job tonight," said Siloam Springs swimming coach Stephanie Goddard. "Several kids are all within less than a second of qualifying (for the state meet) in several individual events. Hard work and determination will win in the end. We will do it!"

The Lady Panthers opened up the meet with a second place finish in the girls 200-yard medley relay. The team of Clair Gryder, Shannon Kretzer, Kaylee O'Hare and Heather Casteel placed second overall and scored 34 points with a time of 2 minutes, 11.15 seconds. The team of Ada Thomas, Catherine Donner, Amanda Glass and Caroline Farine placed seventh with a time of 2:22.13 and scored 24 points. The team of Mercedes Thompson, Britain Castagna, Olivia Shaap and Tabitha Eiland placed ninth and scored 18 points with a time of 2:34.11. The team of Whitney Bunch, Chandler Losh, Kylyn Ruede and Adrienne Turner placed 10th and scored 14 points with a time of 3:14.17.

The boys 200-yard medley relay team of Benjamin Davis, Hayden Moore, Eduardo Suarez and Jackson Noll took first place overall and scored 40 points with a time of 1:58.20. The team of Chase Kruger, Stephen Grant, Benjamin Shaap and Jonathan Little took ninth overall and scored 18 points with a time of 2:13.17. The team of Jordan Norberg, Zachary Becan, Bobby Norwood and Ryke Beever placed 10th and scored 14 points with a time of 2:23.09. The team of Christopher Bailey, Christian Torres, Nick Woodard and Aaron Jones placed 11th and scored 12 points with a time of 2:34.78.

In the girls 200-yard freestyle, Donner placed seventh overall and scored 12 points with a time of 2:38.28, while Olivia Shaap finished eighth and scored 11 points at 2:40.05.

In the boys 200-yard freestyle, Brittan Butler placed second overall and scored 17 points with a time of 2:02.06, while Benjamin Shaap placed eighth and scored 11 points with a time of 2:22.53. Little placed ninth in the event with a time of 2:30.69 and scored nine points, while Norwood was 10th at 2:37.68 and scored seven points.

Glass placed sixth overall in the girls 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:49.92 and scored 13 points. Farine placed ninth with a time of 3:02.24 and scored nine points, while Mercedes Thompson placed 10th with a time of 3:03.97 and scored seven points.

Kruger took fifth overall in the boys 200-yard individual medley with a time of 3:01.07 and scored 14 points. Torres finished sixth overall with a time of 3:06.64 and scored 13 points.

Kretzer took first place in the girls 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.46 and scored 20 points. Losh finished 12th in 35.66 and scored five points, while Turner was 23rd at 42.46 and Bunch 28th at 47.48.

Drew McWhorter took first place in the boys 50-yard freestyle with time of 24.01 and scored 20 points. Noll was fifth at 25.34 and scored 14 points, followed by Grant in sixth place at 25.49 and 13 points, and Beever in seventh at 25.69 and 12 points. Also in the event, Payton Norberg placed 19th with a time of 29.97, while Bailey was 20th at 30.20 and Jones 32.97 in 25th place.

O'Hare placed first in the girls 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.84 and scored 20 points. Gryder was fourth at 1:21.01 and scored 15, while Casteel was fifth at 1:24.02 and scored 14 and Castagna sixth at 1:36.51 and scored 13.

Suarez placed first in the boys 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.42 and scored 20 points. Moore was fourth at 1:10.98 and scored 15, while Woodard was sixth at 1:24.02 and scored 13 points.

Turner placed 26th in the girls 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:35.96.

Butler placed first in the boys 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.94 seconds and scored 20 points. Davis was second at 56.65 and scored 17 points.

In the girls 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Farine, Casteel, Glass and Donner placed fifth overall with a time of 2:02.15 and scored 28 points. The team of Olivia Shaap, Thomas, Thompson and Eiland placed eighth with a time of 2:15.09 and scored 22 points. The team of Castagna, Bunch, Ruede and Losh placed 11th at 2:29.13 and scored 12 points.

In the boys 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Drew McWhorter, Suarez, Grant and Butler placed first with a time of 1:39.76 and scored 40 points. The team of Little, Butler, Moore and Beever scored placed fifth with a time of 1:50.8 and scored 28 points. The team of Jordan McWhorter, Benjamin Shaap, Payton Norberg, Christian Torres scored 22 points with an eighth-place finish of 1:56.11. The team of Bailey, Norwood, Jordan Norberg and Woodard scored 12 points with a time of 2:07.49.

O'Hare placed second in the girls 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.77 and scored 17 points. Gryder placed sixth in the event with a time of 1:17.21 and scored 13 points. Thomas was eighth at 1:23.02 and scored 11 points.

Davis placed third in the boys 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.50 and scored 16 points. Becan was 11th at 1:36.55 and scored six points.

Kretzer placed second in the girls 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:21.70 and scored 17 points. Ruede placed 14th and scored three points with a time of 2:11.27.

Payton Norberg led the Panthers in the boys 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:27.67 and scored 12 points. Becan scored nine points and finished ninth with a time of 1:32.28. Kruger placed 10th with a time of 1:36.47 and scored seven points.

In the girls 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Kretzer, Donner, Gryder and O'Hare finished first overall with a time of 4:25.66 and scored 40 points. The team of Casteel, Thomas, Thompson and Farine placed fifth and scored 28 points with a time of 5:20.10. The team of Castagna, Olivia Shaap, Eiland and Losh placed sixth overall with a time of 5:30.07 and scored 26 points.

In the boys 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Drew McWhorter, Davis, Suarez and Butler placed first with a time of 3:47.66 and scored 40 points. The team of Little, Beever, Grant and Moore placed fifth with a time of 4:07.98 and scored 28 points. The team of Torres, Jordan McWhorter, Woodard and Norwood placed seventh with a time of 4:41.49. The team of Bailey, Kruger, Benjamin Shaap and Becan placed ninth at 4:59.94 and scored 18 points.

Madison Spence finished first in the girls 1-meter diving with a score of 164.05 and scored 20 points. Glass was second with 141.1 and scored 17 points.

In the boys 1-meter diving, Jordan McWhorter placed second with a score of 167.55 and scored 17 points. Jones was third at 148.75 and scored 16 points. Drew McWhorter placed fourth with a score of 147.35 and scored 15 points.

The Panthers and Lady Panthers return to action on Jan. 8 with another Siloam Springs Invitational held at the Hub White Pool at JBU.
