The postponement of the 57th annual Siloam Springs Rodeo from June to July had positive and negative effects, according to Siloam Springs Riding Club officials.
The rodeo was held July 16-18 this year after the rain from Tropical Storm Bill during the rodeo's originally scheduled week -- the third week in June -- forced the Riding Club to move it back a month.
"The rain would have hurt us and most of the contestants would have drawn out due to the arena conditions," said Karen Davis, Riding Club board member. "We didn't have the crowd in July that we normally have in June though. I believe the heat played a factor and people just plan for our rodeo in June."
However, Davis said the rodeo got more contestants in July than had previously signed up for the June date.
A total of 458 contestants were entered for July compared to 400 entered for June, an increase of 58, Davis said.
Rodeo contestants came from 10 different states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
The total payout of the rodeo was $28,678.20, which does not count the junior barrels or mutton busting.
"With those included (the payout) was well over $30,000," Davis said.
Next year the rodeo will return to its regular week -- the third week in June -- and be held June 16-18.
