A familiar face will return to the John Brown University volleyball roster in the fall.
Courtney Marshall, a recently graduated JBU player, has been hired as an assistant volleyball coach, head coach Ken Carver announced last week. Marshall will begin her duties effective July 1.
"I am excited to have Courtney join me as a member of my coaching staff," Carver said. "While I only had the privilege of coaching her for one semester, she is one of the players whom I was able to visit with a lot and get to know well. She, along with the other senior players, demonstrated a significant level of leadership with our team that enabled us to have such a successful year in the midst of transition this past season.
"In addition to her leadership skills, Courtney has the heart of a teacher and counselor, which will help her be an effective coach and establish a great connection with our players. I know how much Courtney cherishes her time at JBU as a player and as an undergraduate student. As a result, she will be a tremendous asset when visiting with potential recruits and their families and sharing with them her JBU success stories. Courtney's work ethic, perseverance and spiritual maturity will serve as a great example to the young women associated with our volleyball family. I am looking forward to working alongside Courtney as together we strive to lead the volleyball program to even greater accomplishments on the court and off."
Marshall just completed four seasons on the Golden Eagle volleyball squad, appearing in 393 career sets while boasting 344 kills, 50 assists, 360 digs and 93 career total blocks. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter completed her requirements for a bachelor's degree in family and human services, graduating in December 2014.
"I am honored to continue on as a part of the JBU volleyball family this fall," added Marshall. "Robyn (Daugherty) and Ken's involvement in my life as a student-athlete at John Brown made a huge impact on me, and I'm so thankful that I will be getting the opportunity to work alongside such Kingdom-minded people. God has been very faithful in opening new doors for me after college, and I look forward to seeing what He continues to do with me in graduate school and on the volleyball coaching staff."
Alongside her coaching duties, Marshall will now begin JBU's Master of Science in marriage and family therapy program, beginning in 2016.
The John Brown volleyball program finished the 2014 regular season with a 22-10 record and boasted a 10-6 mark in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Earning the fourth seed in the SAC tournament, JBU fell in the tournament quarterfinals to fifth-seeded Texas Wesleyan to complete the season. The Golden Eagles open the 2015 season against Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) on Aug. 21.
