The oldest resort in continuous operation in Southwest Missouri celebrated its golden anniversary when it opened the 1965 season.

Ginger Blue, long a popular Elk River resort, had also established a fine reputation for its Sunday smorgasbord, which drew patronage from a wide area and Norman Smith, the resort's owner and genial host, announced that the first smorgasbord of the season would be Sunday, April 4.

Smith commented that while civilization had made inroads into the area in the form of excellent highways and modern accommodations, a visitor could go but a short distance from the highway and imagine himself in the days of Chief Ginger Blue, for whom the resort was named.

Siloam Springs was to be featured in "Southern Living" later in the year. Travel writer Carolyn Werener, of Austin, Texas, was met by Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee members for a tour on March 14.

Unique and historic aspects of the city were visited, such as the Simon Sager Cabin, parks and gazebos, old hotels, the museum, and some renovated historic sites.

The magazine article was written for the interest of tourists and what they could see when they visited Siloam Springs.

Because the magazine works at least five months in advance, the Siloam Springs feature wouldn't be published until the fall or winter, Ms. Werener said. A photographer was to visit couple of months later to supplement the story with pictures of local people and places.
