Graduation week events scheduled

A total of 286 students will be graduating from Siloam Springs High School on Saturday and this week is packed full of graduation activities for students and parents.

Commencement ceremonies will be held at 1 p.m. May 16 in Barnhill Arena on the University of Arkansas campus. John Brown University President Chip Pollard will give the commencement address.

Honor graduates will be recognized at the Chamber of Commerce annual Honors Luncheon, which will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 14, at John Brown University's Simmons Great Hall.

A scholarship awards program will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 14, in the high school theater. A record number of high school students -- 195 -- have applied for scholarships this year, according to scholarship director Lisa Harris. The scholarship program has given more than $9.7 million in local funds over the past 38 years. Last year the program gave students $617,924 for higher education. The totals do not include military and college scholarships or federal grants.

Arkansas Scholars will celebrate their achievements at a barbecue picnic sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce on May 15. The picnic will be held under the awning by the student parking lot entrance immediately after graduation practice. Arkansas Scholars are students that earn grades of C or above in all courses, achieve a 95 percent attendance rate overall and complete Smart Core graduation requirements.

After commencement, graduates can have one last class party in a safe environment thanks to Project Graduation. The goal of the event, which begins at 9 p.m. and ends at 4 a.m, is to keep kids in a safe environment.
