McKinney receives honorable mention honors

After pacing the team in several statistical categories and leading the Golden Eagles to a 21-12 record, John Brown University volleyball's Carly McKinney was named an honorable mention in the 2016 American Volleyball Coaches' Association-NAIA All-Region teams, the AVCA announced on Dec. 6.

The freshman outside hitter paced JBU in kills (323) and kills per set (2.58) while finishing second in total digs (452) and third in attack efficiency (.216 percent). The 6-foot native of Mission Viejo, Calif., set a season-high with 20 kills against Texas Wesleyan on Sept. 23 and posted 18 matches with double-digit termination totals.

McKinney was named the Sooner Athletic's first Attacker of the Week on Aug. 22 before landing All-Conference first team honors.

"I'm really pleased that Carly was able to earn recognition for her performance on the court this season," said head coach Ken Carver. "Her freshman season was just about what I had hoped for and envisioned when I recruited her. At the time of her recruitment, I felt she possessed the skill and ability to come in and develop into the caliber of player similar to Audrey Dearien.

"To put up the numbers she did this year for our team and then have her recognized at the conference and regional level for her achievements definitely justify the high expectations I had for her. As impressive as Carly's first season with our team was, she still has a whole other level which I feel she can play at. She has a great work ethic, is very coachable and desires to grow and mature as a player and a person. Beyond her statistical accomplishments on the court this season, I've really appreciated how Carly has integrated into our team. She brings the right level and balance of intensity and fun on the court with her teammates."

The AVCA All-Region teams are selected by a committee of AVCA coaches.
