JACKSON, Tenn. -- For the second-straight contest, the John Brown University women's basketball team had a lead at the break but was heavily outscored in the third quarter, this time by a 28-19 margin, in a tough 71-64 setback to No. 4 Campbellsville (Ky.) on Friday afternoon inside this historic Oman Arena.
The Tigers (6-0) remained perfect on the season, in large part due to 13 offensive rebounds, which it translated into 19 second-chance points, and the Golden Eagle's 35.1 percent shooting efficiency inside the three-point arc.
JBU (5-3) lost its second-straight, despite holding an eight-point lead in the second quarter, courtesy of a 6-of-17 shooting mark (35.3 percent) from three-point range in the first half. The designated visiting team actually improved from long-range in the second half, shooting 45.5 percent, and had a 19-point third-quarter score overshadowed by a 28-point outburst by the Tigers.
The score was whittled down to three in the fourth quarter, after Campbellsville held a nine-point advantage, after sophomore Baily Cameron and junior Rosa Orpo hit triples over a trio of possessions. Finally closing the gap to 61-58, the Tigers went back to work, creating three shots on its next possession thanks to a pair of offensive boards and rebuilt a five-point lead, 63-58. A turnover and missed field goal over the next two JBU possessions was countered with quick Tiger buckets, placing the game out of reach.
While neither team could build a lead throughout the first quarter, one in which JBU held a narrow 10-9 lead, the Golden Eagles rode a quartet of triples, two from Cameron and one apiece from Orpo and freshman Sara Williams, for the majority of the quarter. John Brown didn't convert a two-point shot until junior Courtney Fine's layup with 1:48 remaining maintained a four-point visitor lead.
Fine also hit a triple with just under a minute left, giving the Golden Eagles a five-point lead, 27-22, at the break.
The Tigers completed the comeback through the first 3:32 of the third quarter, rattling off a 12-7 run, to tie the score at 34 apiece. Campbellsville's Emily Fox hit a triple just 39 seconds later to give the Tigers its first lead, and the designated home team would never look back.
Cameron led all players with 16 points on four triples, but finished the contest 2-of-8 from inside the arc. Her 12 attempted three-pointers fell just one attempt shy of a single-game program record while her 20 attempted field goals tied her for fourth-most in single-game program history.
Senior Kodee Powell added 10 of her 12 points in the third quarter, helping keep the Golden Eagles within striking distance. Orpo hit a pair of triples and contributed a season-best 10 points off the bench.
Jordan Doram finished with the 14-point, 13-rebound double-double, leading five Tigers who finished in double-digit scoring. Emily Fox also poured in 14 points while Madison Clements added 11 points and a steal.
JBU returns to action at Oman Arena tomorrow morning when it faces No. 23 Cumberland (Tenn.) at 10:30 a.m.
